What is FearFest? In 1997, the AMC network launched Monsterfest, a popular week-long marathon of horror movies and thrillers that aired in late October. On September 26, 2008, AMC announced the launch of a new horror-themed movie marathon for its October schedule called “Fearfest” which replaced Monsterfest.  Fear Fest typically runs from mid-October every year until Halloween (often the day after too) and in recent years has run throughout the entire month of October. In 2023 AMC ran a “Kickoff to FearFest” that began on September 25th.

  • Agree with so many of the comments. Halloween is meant to SCARE YOU! Shut the lights and hide your eyes. Tremors? Really? Plus way too much Chunky and too many sequels. The originals are the classics and the genuine scary movies…HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13th, PSYCHO…these are great. I see Jeepers Creepers 2 but no original. That is an under appreciated flick.

I truly do agree. The movies they are showing are not true halloween films.

  • Agreed, tremors,Cujo, and Thinner are not even Halloweenmovies. Play the old classics along with the original Halloween. Then mix in some Exorcist and movies that make you jump. The whole point is to entertain the same movies over and over are boring .. Sorry AMC but you are missing the mark !

Please, please, please, bring back some of the older “classic” monster movies. How many times can I see the same movies year after year. Mix it up a bit and bring back the classics that paved the way for the movies we have today.

I would like to see the original Dawn of the Dead on fear fest. I know it’s a pretty long movie but it is a cult classic. It’s not fear fest unless you have a great Zombie movie on.

  • How can they not show The Exorcist one of the best horror movies off all time. Or Stephen Kings IT. The Strangers was also a good one. Jason X stinks. They should show Jason Goes To Hell.

both AMC and TCM has gotten to be very redundant with October Halloween scary/horror movie selections…over and over each year same-o-same-o….you mean to tell me with all the so called “horror” movies even silent movies since inception, even with Bud A. and Lou Costello…Bowery Boys…Bob Hope etc. etc. etc. someone has to come up with a better selection…..like they say in the NFL….you all deserve a “ComeOnMan”!!!!!

I sent AMC an email detailing this same issue. It is terrible. And, the marathon should be the entire month of October to get all of these movies in

There needs to be more variety: The old Maniac, the classic horrors of dracula, the wolfman, frankenstein, abbot and costello meet frankenstein, the creature from the black lagoon, the scream’s, the godzilla movies, The Thing, The original Psycho, etc. Not just the same Halloween, Friday the 13th and Stephen King movies.

Can amc ever play the texas chainsaw massacre? And they do show the tremors movies every year. Why?

        • DebbieJo

Yes. Absolutely. Play those old movies.

You kind of do the same movies every year. What ever happened to playing the Universal Monster movies or how about bringing back the Hammer Films Monster series. I used to watch this whenever I could but it has become so stagnant and predictable.

    • jeannie

I’m right there with you. There’s only so much Halloween and Friday the 13th you can stomach year after year. The classic old movies may be kinds holey but were cool for their time.

I agree. Monster Fest was far better. I miss the greater variety of monster/horror films that AMC used to run in October. I’m sick and tired of watching “Halloween” marathons on AMC. Also, the entire Tremors series? Are you kidding me? Those films are terrible, and not even in a good way. Another disappointing year….

Yes I agree with this too. I’d much rather see the “classics” even though most of them are in 1:33-1 format – they are better movies and not all about psycho killers. The holiday Halloween is not about psycho killers!

    • I agree, they show the same Friday the 13th and Halloween movies every year. Monsterfest was much better.
Its like whoever programs the movies doesn’t even care and just looks back at previous years and copies the schedule. Its a shame I really used to look forward to the shows they had on AMC back in the days of Monsterfest. I keep having hope every year but I almost feel like Linus setting in the pumpkin patch waiting on the great pumpkin!

I love the fact that they are bringing back the old slasher classics . I just wish they would quit with the walking dead stuff.

I agree 100% and the fact that they’re not starting off with The Walking Dead all the way through October 24 and then starting with the slasher movies I loveThe fact that there starting with the Halloween series and the other movies are spot on with the day and times this year is going to be awesome 🎃💀

AMC Fearfest is the BEST that television has to offer for horror movies during the Halloween season. That being said, in recent years, AMC has inexplicably shortened Fearfest from one month to about 10-14 days worth of horror movies. Personally, I LOVE the Halloween movies during the Halloween season…they NEVER get old!!! I like the Friday the 13th movies as well, especially early during Fearfest. I wish they would drop “The Walking Dead” and their horror light movies like “Thinner.” By way of replacement, I believe that Fearfest would be much better if they featured movies like “The Exorcist”, “The Omen”, “Damien: Omen II”, “Salem’s Lot” (David Soul & James Mason, directed by Tobe Hooper), the original “When a Stranger Calls”, “The Amityville Horror” (parts 1-3), the original “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (parts 1-3), “The Funhouse” (they have shown this but at odd times), “Paranormal Activity” (Part 1), “He Knows You’re Alone”, “The Blair Witch Project”, “The Shining”, “Burnt Offerings”, “Dracula” 1979, “Pet Semetery”, “The Pit and the Pendulum” (Vincent Price), “Suspiria”, “Sinister”, “The Conjuring” and “Witchboard”. I could go on and on…there are a lot of great horror movies out there…mostly the older ones. I do wish they would take this advice, and always run a “Halloween” movie marathon from October 30-31st regardless. And make Fearfest for the whole month of October!! Even Scyfi with their sorry movies does that during October.

YEAH I TOTALLY AGREE ON YOUR COMMENT: THE SHOWS THEY SHOULD SHOW IS ALL THE NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET FILMS 1-6 THEN FREDDY VS JASON AND THEN ALL FRIDAY THE 13TH MOVIES AND CHILDS PLAY… I WOULD TOTALLY AGREE ON THE WALKING DEAD THAT GETS OLD AND ITS NOT SCARY… PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS IS ALSO A GOOD ONE. TRICK OR TREAT, PET SEMETARY 1 AND 2 AND THE NEW ONE IF THEY HAVE IT..

TO: AMC FearFest: ****ALWAYS SHOW THE HALLOWEEN MOVIES AS A MARATHON ON OCTOBER 30-31ST. I recommend focusing on Halloween parts 1-3 (Halloween 3 is very underrated actually), as they are the best of the series and captures the Halloween season perfectly. Here is a complete list of the scariest and best movies that AMC FearFest should show this Halloween season:
            “Halloween” 1978 original classic
            “Halloween II” 1981 (underrated)
“Halloween III: Season of the Witch” 1982 (underrated)
“Halloween 4” 1988 (not as good as previous three but fits season)
“Halloween 5-8” (the movies clearly go down at this point in quality but fit the season)
“Salem’s Lot” 1979 (starring David Soul and James Mason—really scary)
“The Exorcist” 1973 (maybe the scariest movie of all-time)
“The Shining” (Jack Nicholson) 1980 (maybe the scariest movie of all-time)
            “The Omen” 1976 (really scary)
“Damien: Omen II” 1978 (really scary)
“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” 1974 (all-time classic)
            “Psycho” 1960 (all-time horror classic)
            “Psycho II” 1983 (very underrated)
“Psycho III” 1986 (underrated and effective)
“When A Stranger Calls” 1979 (will still give you chills…horrifying classic)
“The Amityville Horror” 1979 (classic haunted house story)
“Amityville II: Possession” 1982 (one of the scariest movies of all-time)
            “Amityville III” 1983
“The Blair Witch Project” 1999 (takes place during Halloween and is very scary)
            “Suspiria” (1977)
            “The Funhouse” 1981 (underrated)
            “He Knows You’re Alone” 1980
            “Dracula” BBC version (1977)
            “Dracula” (1979)
            “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” 1992
“Sinister” 2012 (very scary, one of the few post modern horror successes)
“Paranormal Activity” 2007 (very effective scary movie)
            “Session 9” 2001
            “The Conjouring” 2013
            “The Fog” 1980
